Greetings!

This letter will serve to introduce you to the Emergency Mountaineering First Aid or “EMFA” Course for ACC GMC Leaders. The dates for the course are April 22, 23, 2006 (Saturday & Sunday). The course location is at the Alpine Club Clubhouse in Canmore. The course fee of $185.00 includes textbook, instruction, a good first aid kit at the end of the course and of course GST. Medical cancellation coverage is available for an additional $9.25. In order for you to be confirmed on the course you must prepay the course fee and complete the course application form. If you have not prepaid, we cannot guarantee your spot, so be sure you contact us before the course to confirm availability. See our website for complete cancellation policies and procedures.

The course introduces you to basic first aid related to traumatic injuries in the mountains as well as medical emergencies related to the outdoor & mountain environment. This course has a strong emphasis on the outdoors and improvising with the materials at hand in outdoor situations.

We do not cover CPR as part of the regular EMFA course, so you must have a valid CPR certificate completed in the twelve months prior to the course beginning. Your CPR should be a Level C certificate which means it includes adult, child, infant and two -rescuer CPR. If you do not have a valid CPR certificate we are running a CPR / AED certification on Friday, April 21, 2006. This is the day before the EMFA Course begins. This course will teach the NEW December 2005 CPR / AED standards and it is recommended you take it in any cases as there have been significant changes in protocol. The CPR and AED taught will include one and two rescuer adult, child and infant CPR plus AED. (NOTE: If you don't know "30 and 2" it's time to renew.) The new standards are a big step forward.

The cost for the complete package with CPR, AED & EMFA is $214.00. Medical cancellation coverage for the course is $10.70. The complete course runs from April 21 - 23, 2006 (Friday to Sunday inclusive).

You may also want to consider a standard urban first aid course from a recognized agency to round out your background in other first aid topics which we will not cover. Remember, this course is Outdoor First Aid and does not claim to address urban topics in the same way as a regular urban course.

We will provide instruction and all of the splinting and bandaging materials we need, but we encourage you to bring a pack containing the equipment you might have on a one day or multi-day hiking, skiing, climbing trip for the second day of the course. Everything from packs and sleeping bags to skis and poles can be used to improvise first aid devices. You should wear old comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. We will spend a fair amount of time doing various skills which may have you laying on the floor or down on your hands and knees.

The 2nd edition of the textbook "Wilderness First Aid" by the Wilderness Medical Sociaty and the AAOS is included in the course fees. A number of handouts will also be provided, but you will require your own pencil and paper if you want to make notes. If you would like to purchase a good comprehensive (much more advanced) textbook on wilderness first aid, we can have copies of "Outdoor Emergency Care", 4th edition, available at the course for $96.30 including GST. Please notify us in advance if you would like a copy.

Meeting time and place for the course is 8:00 am, at the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore. Be completely ready for an indoor class at that time. You should prepare a bag lunch and drinks for each day of the course so that lunch breaks can be kept to a reasonable length of time. The course runs from 8:00 to 6:00 each day and is quite intensive. Do not plan to be finished before 6PM on Sunday. An evening session may be involved on Saturday. There is a tremendous amount of material to presented in this short span, so please strive to be on time. In case of emergency you can contact me on my cell phone at (780) 916-7951.

If you have any further questions, feel free to call and ask for Cyril.

Sincerely

Cyril Shokoples IFMGA
